so i typed this on word and had pictures but could not get the pictures to transfer to my blog...well try that later...
Well our Ukraine trip started off with a lot of waiting. We got to Atlanta airport a little over 2 hours before our flight. We went through check-in and security not with many problems. However, when we got to our gate they told us that our flight was delayed by 30 minutes. Then our delay bumped up to 40 minutes and finally we ended up being delayed about an hour. We were very thankful that our New York flight already had a long lay over and so being late did not matter too much. Yet, when we got to New York our patience really was tried. The girl sitting next to me on the plane was from England. She saw me reading my Runners World magazine and told me she just completed her first 5k. So, we talked about running some and I told her about our Ukraine trip. She showed me pictures of her four pit bulls and told me all about them. When we got off the plane she asked me if I had been told I look like Jim Carey before. I said that I have been told that before, but that I don’t really see it.
Since we still had a few hours before our flight to Ukraine, when we got to our gate there were not many people there. So, we thought the flight to Ukraine was not going to be very crowded. We were definitely wrong. When we got on the plane, I did not see many empty seats if there were any at all. Well when got on the plane and everyone’s luggage was in the overheads (which took a little time and funny interactions between people speaking different languages) we thought we were about to leave and then the pilot came on the loud speakers to tell us we were having difficulties.
Well the first difficulty we had was an oil slick. We could not back the plane out from the gate because of the oil slick. Well we got some help to pull us out of the oil slick and then we were stuck in a hole of some kind (did not exactly understand all what was happening). But we did look at the following image (or similar images to it) for an hour and a half before taking off.
The girl sitting next to me on the plane is from Ukraine, but she now lives in the state of Washington. She spoke English, but we still had a hard time understanding each other sometimes. For instance I told her that the flight was the longest flight I had ever been on before. She said she did not know what I meant. So, I said I had never flown overseas and I think she got my idea then even though she still seemed confused by what I said. She was funny though. One of the flight attendants was trying to get all of the bags in the overhead and she almost smashed a few people’s bags. It was obvious the bags were not going to fit, but she tried multiple times. The girl sitting next to me, Anna, laughed and kept saying the flight attendant was so mean. Anna said some words to the flight attendant in Russian and the rest of the time the flight attendant kind of gave her the cold shoulder. One of the things that the pilot said that Anna and I thought was funny was that once we got pulled out of the hole (or pocket) that we were in, then we would not be able to stop (the plane proceeded to make many funny noises). Anna responded in her Ukrainian accent, “Oh no we are going to be flying forever. We might be flying to Jesus, you know heaven.”( I was not sure how to respond so I laughed). After taking off we saw the following views of New York:
We also saw some good views of Long Island, but I was unable to take pictures of them because I was over the wing of the plane and it blocked the view. Nothing too much exciting happened on the plane. Watched a couple of movies and read part of my book written by Jeremy Taylor (not the famous Dothan one, but a less famous English clergyman from the 17th Century). He wrote a book called Holy Living and Holy Dying and it is thick so I barely put a dent in the book. I also read over the bible stories I am teaching at our camp and a few other scripture passages. A couple of movies played, but I will share about that in the next day’s review and I will have better pictures from the next day. We left Friday afternoon from New York and arrived in Ukraine the next morning.
